The Old
Catholic and Anglican Churches enjoy full communion, following
the Bonn Agreement of 1931. Old Catholic life came into being in
Bonn in 1872, one year after the first Vatican Council, through
a group of people who could not accept the dogmas of the
Council, but wished to keep to the faith that was common
previously - hence the name “Old Catholic.” The parish was
established in 1874, a year after the election and consecration
of the first Old Catholic Bishop. Both Bishop and Church were
recognised by the secular authorities. As a result, the Old
Catholic Church has enjoyed equal rights with the Roman Catholic
and Protestant churches to this day.

From 1874 to
1934 the Old Catholic congregation in Bonn met in various
churches provided by the state, then in 1934 a new church was
built by the parish and called Church of The Peace. This was
destroyed by enemy action in 1944 and from then until 1957 the
congregation worshipped in the little chapel of the
Döllinger-Haus, the seminary for Old Catholic priests in Bonn.
In 1957 the present church was built and dedicated to St.
Cyprian, who was Bishop of Carthage and martyred in 258. He is
remembered in the Anglican calendar on 15th September.

Today the
congregation of St. Cyprian’s has a total roll of 570, covering
a large geographical area. There is a youth group, a women’s
group, a choir, a servers’ group, and a real sense of friendship
and fellowship within the social life of the church, with a
large group of volunteers who help wherever help is needed. A
centre for welfare and advice is run professionally, and the
parish operates a kindergarten. The parish priests are The Revd.
Werner Luttermann, (rector), and The Reverend Armin Strenzel,
(assistant priest).
Whenever you
are in the Rhineland you would be most welcome to join us in our
worship. There is the regular parish Eucharist every Sunday
morning at 10 a.m., and a mid-week Eucharist in the Sacramental
chapel on most Thursdays at 8.30 p.m. followed by Compline, the
traditional night prayer of the Church. St. Cyprian's is
especially looking forward to welcoming a group of friends from
All Saints' Culmstock in Bonn next year to strengthen the bonds
of the Link between the two parishes in full Communion.
