The first reference in the bishop's register to St Andrew's Church Clayhidon, is on Feb. 27th. 1274, and shows Ralph de Hidon being presented to the living. In the south aisle lies a 13th century effigy, said to depict Ralph, son of Sir John de Hidon, lord of the manor. The font, of Ham Hill stone, is also 13th century as is the chancel arch with its two chamfered orders; it remains the most outstanding feature of the original 13th century building.

Late 15th century work carried out by the Dynham family, patrons of the church; included the building of the tower and south aisle. During this period the wagon roofing in the nave and chancel was erected and also a rood screen, access to the rood loft was by the stair turret set into the south aisle wall. An inventory of 1553 shows there were four bells.

The pulpit and old altar table are from the 17th century. Civil war saw the removal of the rood screen. The west-end gallery was constructed in the 18th century, for use by the musicians and choir. The Ten Commandments boards were fitted to the east wall of the chancel, then the Degrees of Marriage.

The 19th century saw further improvements; the four bells were recast into five. The interior of the church was completely restored. In 1878 a stove was fitted where once a north door had been, a photograph shows the chimney.

The 20th century saw several programmes of work; the rough casting of the tower was renewed, a sixth bell was added and a new bell cage was installed. Axminster carpet was laid in 1952 and in 1960 the priest's door was filled in.

Recently the porch door and west door were replaced. A memorial screen was erected between the gallery and ringing chamber. Celebrating the Millennium, an oak vestry screen was installed and a further screen below the gallery is planned.

The building has evolved with the times but you will find much that is not just about history or architecture. The church has stood as solid testimony to the Christian faith. It is a place where for centuries the Christian family of Clayhidon has worshipped the Lord.
